Which brakes are more important front or back?

In a GENRAL situation ( a normal sadan car ) the front breaks are very much the most important because the majority of the mass is behind the front brakes. Take for example if you had two handbrake’s in the car, one directly connected to the rare breaks and one directly connected to the front brakes

If you fully locked the rear wheels you will just slide slowly to a stop because the mass of the car is in front of the rare breaks.

If you fully locked the front wheels you will come to a complete stop quickly because the mass is behind the brake’s.

Now if we refer to a normal car again (with out the theoretical handbrake’s) a car’s foot pedal breaking system is set up to send a majority of the breaking power to the front breaks and (only form memory) the ratio is 80:20.

This may be easier to understand…..

The rear brake system helps control the car when it stops so that it doesn’t tilt or swerve in the back and veer off the road. The car is less likely to spin out or fishtail by having the balance of the rear brakes. Rear brakes help to reduce the stopping distance.

Rear brakes help to preserve the life of the front brakes by sharing the workload. They tend to last longer than the front brakes because they don’t endure the pressure that the front brakes do.
The power for the emergency brake system comes from the rear brake pads. The emergency brake forces the car to stop immediately.
